What is GERD?

GERD Definition: is the medical acronym for : Gastro- Esophageal Reflux Disease.

A brief explanation on how the digestive system works will better help to understand what GERD is all about.

The human body naturally produces stomach acid in order to help our digestive system to function better. Food that we swallow travel from the Esophagus to our stomach. The “Esophagus”, commonly called the food pipe or digestive tube extend from the throat to the stomach.

A muscle ring called Esophageal Sphincter (LES) behaves like a valve and is located At the bottom of the esophagus in junction with the stomach. Its function is to prevent stomach acid from flowing back into the Esophagus.

A malfunction of the Esophageal Sphincter results in Acid stomach backing up from the stomach into the esophagus (the food pipe). In other words the muscle ring, is not contracting correctly thus letting stomach acid pass trough.

The first picture is a Diagram illustrating acid stomach flowing back into the Esophagus ( the digestive tube).
Notice the muscle ring (Esophageal Sphincter) is not contracting enough allowing acid stomach
to surge up into the Digestive tube (Esophagus).
The second image is a inside stomach look of what the Esophageal Sphincter naturally looks like.

So acid reflux symptoms are most of time related to a malfunction
of the muscle Ring (Esophageal Sphincter) – I say most of the time but not always.

Is it possible to permanently get rid of Acid reflux ?
the answer is YES !

There’s basically two options available in regards to permanently curing Acid reflux, heartburn or GERD.
First option is surgery and should be considered as last resort. In most case when People consider surgery
it’s because they can not support the pain anymore or haven’t found a remedy that could
ease the pain enough to be able to live with it.
Next option is natural products or remedies to heal GERD or heartburn.
